Good evening,
This time of year often sees an increase in motor vehicle thefts from homes, and an increase in Burglaries in the lead up to Christmas as the evenings get darker earlier. Kent Police are running a number of targeted operations across the area to target vehicles and offenders linked to these types of crime.
Please remain vigilant, and consider the following:
- Burglaries and vehicle thefts don't just happen at night. Criminals may target properties in the early evenings when it's dark enough to not be seen but you might not be in - usually from half 6 to half 8. Be aware of locking vehicles and keeping the house secure.
- Talk to your neighbours. Offenders will often visit locations beforehand, be sure to report anything that seems ‘off’ to you - for example an unusual vehicle loitering, or multiple passengers in a vehicle.
- Be aware of distraction burglaries, where someone comes to the door to distract you while someone else breaks in. If you get a cold caller, ask for ID. If they can't provide it, shut the door.
- Consider light timers if you're out, or ideally CCTV for the front and back of the house.
- If you think a crime is happening, call 999. Please don't leave it for someone else, or not report it because you ‘don’t want to waste our time'. If you're not sure, tell us and we can assess it.
If you have any questions, myself and my colleagues will try and find time to talk you through things. Send us a message on here and we'll find time to discuss.
Best, Fergus |
